If Carl Jung Had Gone into Advertising
Hello Catalyst Friends,
I am looking forward to being part of the group and developing right along with you. I hope that together we will make good things happen!
Here is my response to the first assignment.
In the United States, new acquaintances often ask, "What do you do?" That phrase refers to one's employment, job, or career. It's a safe question. But it is also limiting. And it doesn't get to the passions that stir in the soul. I prefer the European version of this game in which one asks, "What are you?" Or, "What do you love?" This creates a much more interesting conversation. Because we are more than our jobs, we have many interests, and we often have higher aspirations than our current station in life. And it makes it much more fun.
Here is how I would answer these two questions differently.
What do you do?
I'm a Creative Director at an advertising agency. I have my own firm, Leopold Ketel.
What are you?
I am an advertising creative, an entrepreneur, a branding specialist, a mythologist, a cook, a comic book geek, a lover of dogs, an esotericist, left-libertarian, closet psychologist, designer, writer, coach and father of a 26-year-old man.
How about you, dear Catalyst friends? What are you?
Let me know in the comments.
Here's a proper bio:
I was born in Seattle in 1959 and moved to Portland with my family at the age of five. I've lived here ever since. From an early age, I was drawn to creative pursuits such as writing and drawing. And oddly, I had an interest in advertising more so than I did most TV programming as a kid. After a stint in trade school, I was accepted at the Pacific Northwest College of Art where I completed a BFA in graphic design. From there I toiled in the fields of advertising and design agencies in Portland for 10 years until I opened a firm with three partners. I've been working at Leopold Ketel since 1996 and have enjoyed working for some of Oregon's most respected companies. Many of which have been non-profit organizations, like the Oregon Humane Society and Planned Parenthood.
Like many Portlanders, I have many passions, including cooking, hiking, Jungian psychology, mythology, and mysticism. And I'm the proud father of a 26-year-old man.
If you ever wondered what would happen if you crossed Carl Jung with an advertising man, the final result would be me. And that is the subject for another post.

Marketing and advertising are a few of my favorite subjects as it really has much to do with the psychology of people . Understanding the behavior of people and learning how to influence their actions is a very interesting. (Natasha)
ReplyDeleteWhat do I do? I work 3 jobs, not including being a parent of two teenage girls. In order from most hours to less... packaging at Gamblin Artist Colors, receptionist and filing specialist at Oregon Center for Change, and designer/ technician for Neon Gods, a vintage neon restoration company.
ReplyDeleteWhat am I? I'm a creative, determined, woman with a keen eye and solid sense of design who loves to basically do anything with her hands. I love to cook with nutrition dense foods, listen to podcasts about psychopaths, snuggle my dog, play board games, dance, play music, and surround myself with genuine, loving people that are self aware and have a sense of humor.
I practice being open to what life throws my way and follow any opportunity that feels emotionally, socially, physically, or spiritually rewarding (unless I'm in a self deprecating mood). Ultimately, I'm an artist...but I'm not quite sure what that means yet.
