My Weird Ass Goal for 2017
Goal
Start a new consulting company and have a sustaining client base by the end of the year. Target goal: yearly salary of $75K to begin. Sales of $300K in 2018.
That doesn’t sound so weird, does it? Here’s what’s unusual about my new consulting group. It will feature astrologers and psychics in addition to traditional business consulting practices.
This idea coalesced after reading a story by Malcolm Gladwell about a group called The Screwball Division. During the height of WWII, the Allied intelligence services thought the Nazis were running a secret operation, but they could quite figure out what it was. To help them, they employed a group of unlikely people, which included more creative types, or ‘screwballs’ as they called them then, to discern the German operation. They gave this group a stack of newspapers and a few radio broadcasts and said, “Find out what the Nazis are up to and come back in a week.” Seven days later, the team gave their report. “Yes, the Germans are up to something, alright,” they said. “They have created a missile called the V2 rocket. If they launch it, they could win the war. You must destroy the factory. Here is where it is located…” The Allies did indeed destroy the factory and ultimately won the war. And from this point on, the Screwball Division was born.
I was so intrigued with this story that I bought ScrewballDivision.com, thinking that someday I would build a business with this concept in mind.

For the last twenty-one years, I’ve lead an advertising and branding agency in Portland. Over that time the business climate has changed radically. Technology has been the greatest driver of this change. And aside from business becoming faster and less personal, it has made clients more data driven and more fearful. The competition for the services we provide in Portland has become fierce. Design and advertising creative services are a commodity. This is what drives me to find a difference. I believe I have found one.
What’s in it for me
Freedom and authority. In my current incarnation, I am tied to a persona that I have outgrown. I’m much more than a marketing communications service provider. And I’ve been working for myself for so long I doubt I can work for someone else.
This new venture folds in my greater world view of a mystical and magical world—and because it is an avenue that few traverse, it allows a greater sense of authority. I won’t be arguing about the color of a logo as I have in the past. I will state findings and will have little argument over direction.

Obstacles to overcome
Non-believers are my greatest obstacle. I will be derided and will likely lose friends and potential business. It may be difficult to find clients unless I have a kick-ass marketing concept.
Skills and knowledge required
I will need to have skills in astrology, psychic phenomena, and other esoteric knowledge. I have been studying those. The other skills I lack are detail, left brain skills. In my career, I have been able to partner with others to shore up my lack in those areas. Specifically, I need an operations partner and an account executive partner as well as support in those areas.
People and groups to work with
I will need to build a base of freelancers in the esoteric arts until I can find a regular panel of associates. These are readily available, and I have been working on acquiring them.
I will need to register with various consulting associations including the Futurist Association of America.

THE REFLECTIVE SCRIPT
I'm encouraged by the positive feedback. Thank you all!
Most of the criticism centers around the fact that I did not describe exactly what my service offerings would be. A valid critique. I need to focus on the services and how I describe them. I figured that would come during the marketing plan phase which is coming up. I need to be clear on my services and what a perfect project would be. I will work on that.
The next criticism was that I glossed over challenges. I believe this to be true as well.
Personally, I tend to procrastinate. I also suffer from self-criticism: nothing is good enough. Those two are major challenges.
From a business perspective, the major challenge will be enticing clients to try our services. Another will be financing since I'll be bootstrapping this endeavor. A third will be being clear on my service offerings. Finding the right screwballs will be a challenge. Managing all the screwballs will be an even greater challenge. Finding a business partner is what I consider my greatest challenge. I can get by in the beginning but I need a good business partner who is good at managing details. I'm not a detail kind of guy. As you may have noticed. That's another challenge.
Thanks again, guys!

Jerry,
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your goal, more than I can ever express in words. If feels clear, much needed, thoughtfully considered and bold. As for the non believers, they are everywhere; in every field of study and practice. We must be open, loving and discerning. I am constantly in the process of weeding out the toxic and developing skills to attract the magical (which unfortunately was branded by lost souls). This brings me to your marketing concept. Do you have a target audience? Is that within your business plan in place? There are so many types of individuals that will be attracted to your services...I feel like the voice, image and verbiage will be key and having that target audience, crucial.
I have a few local, and not so local resources. I've been dipping in and out of this world since I was born...we should chat :)
Jerry,
ReplyDeleteLove the direction you are headed. The scientific process is near and dear to my heart, but I also believe that people that are in tune with their intuition have a knack for bypassing logic and coming to the same conclusion sometimes faster and more convincingly (of course it is also useful to check these results Against the scientifically verifiable ones). I know from my work as a voice teacher and music therapist, that one can see in to the inner workings of another through the way they sing, and likewise, I imagine that intuitive individuals that you work with will be able to cut to the core of an individual's needs in ways that a traditional consultant would not be able to see.
In my mind, having doubters and people that resist your idea is a great sign that you are headed in a direction that works. If an idea doesn't polarize at least a few people, it is a boring and conventional one that will only operate in a boring and conventional world. Also, these non-believers could be a huge asset to you. If they are so inflamed by what you are doing, they surely will be discussing it with others, spreading the idea of what you do for you.
If you need assistance with finding people to work with in esoteric fields, I have some names I could suggest.
Jerry - I love the concept. I'm going to call bullshit on your obstacles though. "Non-believers" are NOT your greatest obstacle. You're not selling to nonbelievers. And you don't need them. I think that's a dodge.
ReplyDeleteWhat are your true obstacles? My guess is that they are internal.
Likewise, I think you could go deeper in what skills and knowledge you need. I have a feeling you've dodged this a little too.
Best,
Douglas
Hey Jerry,
DeleteI appreciate your concept. My only sense is putting some specific energy into your partnerships, particularly those who fill specific gaps for you (sounds like admin and detail based work). Seems like place you could get a leg to stand on while taking a leap.
Thanks for sharing.
Good morning Jerry! Thanks for sharing this with us. When you initially described your project last week I was so excited to see it come to fruition. I think that the world needs more of this and I'm excited that you are going to bring it. I don't know anything about marketing firms/ think tanks or the consolidation of purpose amongst so many people necessary to bring about a plan as ambitious and far reaching as this one. So I am at a loss about how to constructively comment. It occurred to me to wonder if adding pro-bono consultation to the budget would help build your brand/ reputation? How will you reach out to potential clients?
ReplyDeleteYou listed freedom as being one of the benefits that is most important to you a couple of times. And walking towards esotericism in your life. I feel like I heard that you want those two assets to be in your life to a greater degree than they are now. I like this goal and I think you should attain it! Is it the easiest way to accomplish the freedom and esoteric work that you are craving?
I am incredibly curious! Let me get this straight, so the idea is to use "screwball" types to help create marketing/ad campaigns? Because if it is, this may have quite a bit of potential. I would love to see the results of something like this. Have you tested this theory at all? Before starting a business get a bunch of these types together for trial work? If so what happened? I would just love to see more details about this venture.
ReplyDeletewhoa, what a fascinating project! Like Natasha, I am a little confused about the its scope. Are you hoping to collect "freelancers in the esoteric arts" to do marketing work? Or are you hoping to offer astrology and psychic services in addition to more traditional small business support services? Also, what do you envision your role in all of this to be? Are you hoping to offer consulting based on your own skills in astrology, psychic phenomena, and other esoteric knowledge, or will you continue to offer the same consulting services you have in the past, but under the umbrella of a very different organization? Looking forward to learning more!
ReplyDeleteHey Jerry, this concept sounds interesting but I too am wondering what the aim of your business will be. What would an ideal project look like? What would the process look like for a client who comes to you? It would be helpful to understand that. I'm also wondering how the Screwball Division came to uncover what the Germans were actually up to. I think it would be beneficial to be able to explain your ideas in a more concrete way. You identify that you're weaker on left-brained, detail-oriented tasks. How do you find a business partner who has those skills but also understands your goal? You may need to adjust your pitch. Or maybe not! I am excited and curious to hear more about your plan, as someone who is far from a non-believer, but definitely skeptical of astrology, psychic matters, and Malcolm Gladwell.
ReplyDeleteWas it Robert Anton Wilson who flipped around Arthur C. Clarke's adage and stated that "a system of magic which is sufficiently sophisticated is indistinguishable from technology"? I love the idea of the Screwball Division consultancy! And yeah, the skeptics aren't your clients, so to entropy with them! I suspect managing the interesting personalities that comprise your team will be a challenge, only because it'll be a mix of interesting personalities (and not because they'll be breaking out into pendulum battles at the slightest disagreement).
ReplyDeleteHi Jerry — Jacqueline here. I also come from a background of creative agencies in New York and Portland and although your title states it's weird — I think you're really on-point! Have you done much consumer research on the kind of "muse" or consumer you think the Screwball Division would service? What kind of questions are they looking for answers for? I think of Casadaga in Florida (where I am from) where people from all over to seek guidance and input from those in the spiritual and esoteric arts. What I find fascinating about that is that even though these people practice an art that occupies a much more "vague" space in terms of "professionalism" there is still quite a bit of validation and accreditation by way the community — have you thought about what credentials, or how you would "validate" your panel of experts to your consumer? I think it's a great idea though, am looking forward to hearing more.
